Two barracks at Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy, have received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

According to a news release issued by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the designation is the first for a Department of Defense facility overseas and the first time an Army facility has received such a rating.

The two barracks buildings, completed in 2005, were designed by Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering of Norfolk, Va. Impressa Pizzarotti of Parma, Italy, was the construction firm.

The two four-story structures cost 21 million euros and house about 300 soldiers.

The project was judged based on such criteria as water savings, energy efficiency, construction materials and indoor environmental quality.
