AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — U.S. servicemembers and civilians in Italy are now allowed to register up to three vehicles simultaneously, ending a policy interpretation that limited registrations over the length of tours and left some relying on a waiver program to replace lemons.
The change replaces a longtime practice of allowing personnel to register a total of three vehicles throughout their stay in the country.
“The Naples Central Motor Vehicle Registration Office has updated its administrative procedures to allow personnel stationed in Italy the ability to have three motor vehicles registered under the Allied Forces Italy system, at any one time,” Navy Lt. Peter Pagano, spokesman for Naval Support Activity Naples, said in a statement. “This procedural update went into effect at the end of March.”
The prior policy interpretation, based on an agreement with Italy, drew complaints from people stationed across services and bases in the country, particularly among those with extended assignments whose vehicles had mechanical problems.
“We appreciate this significant privilege afforded to U.S. and NATO personnel by our host nation, and will continue to respect the agreement governing it,” Pagano said.
All motor vehicle registration offices in Italy are now allowing people to take advantage of the update, officials said.
No change has been made to the policy governing tax-free registration of motor vehicles, Pagano said. Servicemembers and civilians can register one vehicle exempt from Italian road and gasoline taxes, along with two additional vehicles that must have road and gasoline taxes paid.
