The generosity of airmen and civilians affiliated with U.S. Air Forces in Europe allowed the command to exceed its monetary goal to the Air Force Assistance Fund Campaign by 69 percent.

USAFE donated more than $767,000 to this year’s campaign, exceeding the command’s goal of about $453,000. About 9,890 people within USAFE made donations, with the average donation being $77.60, said Sammie Edwards, USAFE AFAF project officer.

The AFAF campaign, which ran from Feb. 16 to May 7, brought in more than $6 million Air Force-wide, exceeding last year’s campaign total of $5.1 million.

Active-duty servicemembers, retirees, and members of the National Guard and reserve contributed through payroll deductions or cash, Edwards said.

Edwards attributes publicity to the campaign’s success.

“Each installation project officer had the responsibility of getting the word out,” she said. “I think it’s just amazing the way the Air Force has just stepped up to the plate, met and exceeded the challenge from last year.”

The money will go to four charities associated with the Air Force: the Air Force Aid Society; the Air Force Enlisted Men’s Widows and Dependents Home Foundation Inc.; the Air Force Village Indigent Widows Fund; and the Gen. and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, which helps widows of both enlisted airmen and officers.
