A U.S. servicemember died Friday in northern Syria from injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover, the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria said in a statement.

The statement did not identify the victim or branch of service, saying the coalition prefers to defer identification to “relevant national authorities.” It said further information will be released as appropriate.

U.S. troops, mainly special operations forces, have been helping train, advise and assist local Syrian forces in the counter-ISIS fight.

Earlier this week, the Marine Corps released the first images of an artillery mission Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted in support of Kurdish and Syrian Arab forces in that country. A spokesman told the Marine Corps Times that the Marines fired more than 4,500 rounds during the two-month mission.

Another Marine artillery unit replaced the those Marines recently, but the new unit has not been identified, the publication said.
