CHIEVRES, BELGIUM — Community leaders from Chievres and SHAPE will cut the ceremonial ribbon Wednesday on a new and more spacious commissary.

The commissary at Chievres Air Base is the latest in a series of construction projects that have greatly upgraded this joint-service community. U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, based at nearby Daumerie Caserne, has seen the cement dry on a dormitory, a 94-room hotel and other projects, such as a library in Schinnen, Netherlands, and a multi-use complex at Brussels American School.

The $16 million commissary represents a significant upgrade for the people of Chievres and nearby Mons, where Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe is located. Over the years the commissary has moved from an old aircraft hangar to a large tent, then to the prefabricated structure it most recently called home.

Defense Commissary Agency spokeswoman Gerri Young said the new store will feature many of the concepts and amenities of other recently opened stores, including wider aisles, enhanced produce and meat departments, and a modern deli and bakery.
