SEOUL — Two South Koreans accused of murdering a taxi driver and fleeing onto Yongsan Garrison were sentenced to prison Thursday, prosecutors confirmed.
Kim Tae-ho, 17, and his girlfriend, Yoon Hae-sun, 17, were sentenced for robbing and killing 58-year-old Chong Young-ung, of Seoul.
Kim was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Yoon will serve five years.
Samuelu Iakopo Jr., a 55th Military Police Company investigator, witnessed the off-base taxi hit another car on Yongsan’s south post Feb. 8.
Kim fled on foot when approached by Iakopo, but the investigator caught and subdued Kim before turning him over to Korean police.
Iakopo was presented with an Army achievement medal for his actions. South Korean police also gave him an award certificate.
