Maj. Gen. Fred D. Robinson Jr., 1st Armored Division commander, has been tapped to lead the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command and Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., according to a Department of Defense news release.

Robinson has commanded “Old Ironsides” since July 2005. Maj. Gen. Mark P. Hertling, deputy chief of staff for the U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, previously was named as Robinson’s successor.

Brig. Gen. Dennis L. Via, commander of the 5th Signal Command in Mannheim and information management officer for U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, also is heading stateside, the release stated. Via, who was nominated for a second star in November, will become commanding general, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Life Cycle Management Command and Fort Monmouth, Fort Monmouth, N.J.

He will be replaced by Brig. Gen. Susan S. Lawrence, director of command, control, communications and computer systems for U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
