CAMP ZAMA, Japan — About 40 Boy Scouts and Scouts leaders from the region, and 10 from the United States, will visit Tama Hills Recreation Area near Tokyo on Friday as part of the National Leadership Seminar for the Far East Council, which serves Japan, South Korea, Okinawa, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
Leading them this year will be two of the Boy Scouts’ most impressive youth leaders: Patrick Murphy, 18, the new national chief of the Order of the Arrow, the Scouts’ national honor society, and Ross Armstrong, 19, newly elected Western Region chief for the order.
“This is a unique [opportunity] for any Boy Scout council, let alone one as distant as ours,” said Guy Eichsteadt, Far East Council Scout executive, in a written statement. “A National Leadership Seminar is usually conducted for several councils, never only one. And to have both the national and regional chiefs attend is a great compliment to the quality of our scouting program.”
The seminar also will bring together other national and regional leaders to develop leadership skills, according to Derek Hartley, Japan District Scout executive and the event manager.
“The weekend is action-packed and ‘go from the start,’” Hartley said in a statement. “A lot of information is packed into a short time period, and with the caliber of these national-level youth leaders we plan to take advantage of every moment of their time.”
