GODEGA DI SANT’ URBANO, Italy — Three airmen stationed at Aviano Air Base have been detained by Italian authorities following a fight early Sunday at an area dance club.

The incident took place at the Manhattan club, which is just off the SS-13 about a half-hour’s drive west of the base and just a few minutes from Sacile, a community with a sizable American population.

Base officials refused to release the names of those detained. An Albanian national who worked as a bouncer at the club reportedly was hospitalized as a result of injuries he sustained in the incident. There was no information on the condition of the Americans involved, though they were reportedly still in custody Monday.

No further details about the incident were available. A short report in the Italian Messaggero Veneto newspaper said club employees tried to break up the fight and then called the carabinieri.

Capt. Chris Ferretti, chief of international law for the base’s legal office, said military officials are looking into the incident and may request that Italian authorities waive their primary jurisdiction. Such a move is common in similar cases, and is covered under the Status of Forces Agreement.
