NAHA, Okinawa — A charge of theft against a Camp Hansen Marine allegedly involved in the robbery of a taxi driver has been dropped by Japanese prosecutors.

A Naha District Public Prosecutor’s Office spokesman on Tuesday said the office decided not to indict Lance Cpl. Tony Alphonso Lewis Jr., 20, in the theft of a cash box containing 15,700 yen, about $133, from a parked cab in Naha on New Year’s Day.

Lewis was arrested by Japanese police some four hours after the theft. He was identified by the driver, but denied any knowledge of the theft.

He has returned to duty, a Marine spokesman said.

“There has been no evidence presented to the United States Marine Corps that a crime was committed by Lance Cpl. Lewis Jr.,” the spokesman wrote in response to a Stripes query.

“Therefore, he is not currently pending any judicial or administrative action for this alleged offense.”
