The devastating floodwaters that hit Tennessee last weekend shuttered the U.S. Navy Personnel Command offices in Millington, leaving sailors unable to check personnel records and get orders for their next duty station, officials said.
A Navy spokeswoman said it’s unknown how many sailors are waiting to find out where they’ll be serving next.
“We’d need to access the system for that, and the system is down,” spokeswoman Sharon Anderson said from the Pentagon.
Chief petty officers waiting to learn whether they’ll been promoted to E-8 also will have to wait until the selection board can access the Electronic Military Personnel Records System, according to a Navy press release.
While sailors can continue to conduct re-enlistment and job-selection activities as normal using the Career Management System/Interactive Detailing, those sailors who are responsible for assigning jobs, called detailers, have no access to the system, Anderson said.
Sailors worldwide are unable to access the personnnel site Bupers Online, the Physical Readiness Information Management System, the Web Enabled Record Review and the command’s website, among others.
Navy officials don’t know how long it will take to get the computer systems back online and people back at their work desks. The flood severely damaged roughly one-third of the base’s buildings, Millington base spokesman David Crenshaw said.
Another third of the buildings were untouched and deemed safe, and some employees were able to return to work Tuesday, Crenshaw said. The remaining third of the buildings “look as if they can be occupied, with some effort.”
