RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — More than 70 athletes took part in several events Friday during the Spring Special Olympics for students at Defense Department schools.
The students, who have moderate-to-severe learning disabilities, were joined by 300 volunteers for the competition, which included relay races, badminton, softball, tee ball, football throws, tennis and tug of war.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community Rheinland Pfalz Special Olympics Organization hosted the event at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center. It had been discontinued for several years because of funding issues.
After each event, place ribbons were given out. The day culminated in an award ceremony where each athlete received a medal. A trophy was awarded to the Kaiserslautern High School team.
The games were open to all Department of Defense Education Activity Europe Schools, but only Germany-based schools, along with two home-schooled students, participated.
