A sailor was found dead Monday, apparently of a gunshot wound, aboard the USS Gary in port at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan.

The identity of the male petty officer second class is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, Cmdr. Scott Gureck, 7th Fleet spokesman, said late Monday.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is conducting an investigation into the death, Gureck said.

The Gary, a guided missile frigate with a crew of about 290 is permanently based at Yokosuka.
