YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — A South Korean augmentee to the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division was found dead Friday morning near a Tongduchon apartment building.

American military investigators and South Korean police are investigating, officials said Friday.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the superintendent of the apartment building heard a loud thud around 7:30 a.m. and found a man’s bleeding body near the entrance of the complex.

The body, later identified by South Korean police as “Sgt. Cho,” was wearing a white shirt and black shorts, witnesses told police. The victims face suffered severe injuries.

Police said they did not find any notes on the body, but they believe the death was a suicide.

Tongduchon Police Box Cpl. Park Moon-son said officers responded and completed a preliminary inspection of the area, then immediately contacted Uijongbu Police Station and U.S. military police.

The Dongnam apartment complex is a 10-minute walk from Camp Casey, Park said.

According to a release issued by the 2nd Infantry Division, the augmentee was stationed at Camp Sears and assigned to Headquarters Battery, 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery.
