An Italian businessman who turned police informant to break up waste disposal rackets run by organized crime in Naples was executed in a mafia-style shooting Sunday, according to Italian news reports.

Michele Orsi once had ties to the Camorra, Naples’ Mafia, and had planned to testify against clan members on extortion and racketeering charges surrounding allegations tying the Camorra to Naples’ trash crisis, according to a report in the Naples daily Il Napoli.

Orsi was gunned down in broad daylight in a piazza in Casal di Principe, with a message: "imposing terror and reminding all those who put themselves against the Camorra have no escape," the paper reported.

Orsi was shot several times in the abdomen and head, Il Napoli reported.

The shooting took place on the same day that thousands of residents turned out to protest the site of a proposed garbage dump in the Chiaiano neighborhood of Caserta. In an ironic reference to the Italian government’s plan to open the dump site, the front page of Il Napoli featured a photo of protesters carrying a banner that translated to "the garbage decree is a license to kill."
