RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — The 435th Air Base Wing and 86th Airlift Wing passed their first combined Air Force unit compliance inspection with an overall grade of "excellent," base officials announced recently.

All nine groups between the two wings — comprised of 39 squadrons and about 10,000 personnel — also were rated excellent, the second-highest mark on a scale ranging from outstanding to unsatisfactory.

The inspection wrapped up earlier this month, after more than 150 Air Force inspectors evaluated units on their compliance with the Air Force, Defense Department and U.S. Air Forces in Europe instructions.

"It’s very paperwork intensive. You need to show records and documentation," said 435th Air Base Wing spokesman Aaron Schoenfeld.

For instance, one record-keeping task required of the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron is maintaining self-inspection checklists, documenting that they track their equipment inventory, Schoenfeld said.

"They aced it," he said. "They’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to be doing."

The base police squadron was among several wing units to earn an "outstanding" rating.

The others were the Ramstein Sexual Assault Response Coordinator’s Office; 435th Comptroller Squadron; 435th Services Squadron; and the 2nd Air Postal Squadron.

Under the 86th’s side of the house, 11 of 14 squadrons received a grade of "excellent," according to wing vice commander Col. Doug Sevier.

"While we have not received the final report from the inspection team outlining areas that need improvement, we do know that no areas will require re-inspection by the evaluation team," Sevier said in an e-mail.

No follow-up inspections will be required of the 435th, either, said wing commander Col. Don Bacon, who noted that every area was rated "satisfactory" or better.
