The post office at NAS Keflavik, Iceland, received the highest possible score following an inspection last week by the U.S. Navy’s postal adviser in Europe.

“They got a perfect score,” Chief Petty Officer Victor Gonzalez said in the news release announcing the inspection results. “Out of 282 points possible, they received 282. It’s the best post office I’ve seen in theater so far.”

Gonzalez, based in Naples, Italy, spent three days at the base doing the inspection. He has visited every post office in theater, including those on ships assigned to Europe.

Gonzalez looked at everything from the handling of registered mail and money orders to customer service and transportation of mail, the release said.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Shawn Gibbons, the postal officer at the base, was pleased with the report.

“To be honest with you, based on our reputation, I’m not surprised,” he was quoted as saying in the release. “My folks do take pride in what they do.”

Gonzalez agreed.

“These guys have done an outstanding job, all the way from senior chief to the seamen,” he said in the release.

According to the release, Gonzalez said he usually has some advice or suggestions for postal crews, but he could think of nothing to help the Keflavik staff.

“Normally, I do have something to say,” he said. “So that shows how well they’re running this operation, how impressive.

“The only suggestion I had was, please keep doing what they’re doing,” he said.
