TORUN, Poland — One Polish civilian was killed and another critically injured in a road collision with a U.S. Army vehicle.

The accident happened late Tuesday along a stretch of road near the town in Swietoszow, where a joint force of Polish, American, British and German soldiers had gathered for exercises in nearby Torun.

A passenger in the civilian vehicle was killed, and the injured driver was transported to a hospital in Boleslawiec.

The Army vehicle belonged to the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. No Americans were injured in the crash.

U.S. Army commander Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges offered his condolences early Wednesday.

“Security and safety during these exercises is the most important thing and we will continue to work very hard ... to minimize the possibility of accidents,” he said. “More important than anything, our hearts and our prayers go out to the families of the Polish civilian who was killed and we pray for a quick recovery of the one who was severely injured.”

Hodges said the incident is currently under investigation by Polish authorities.
