SINGAPORE — One man was shot dead and two others were detained after the driver attempted to drive through a security cordon at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore on Sunday.
It remained unclear why the vehicle tried to drive through barricades protecting the weekend summit, which included Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and high-level officials from much of Asia and Europe.
Police stopped the car at a checkpoint and asked the driver to open the trunk at 4:36 a.m., according to a Singapore police statement.
Instead, the driver suddenly accelerated and ignored warnings to stop, police said.
Police opened fire after the driver continued crashing through barricades leading to the Shangri-La Hotel, home of the security summit.
One person detained was carrying “substances believed to be drugs,” according to the statement. It is not immediately known whether the driver was under the influence of intoxicants.
Singapore had already deployed police carrying automatic weapons and other significant security measures to protect the summit participants. After the shooting, police shut down access on multiple roads leading to the summit and blocked foot traffic for several hours.
Several summit attendees were delayed arriving but later were escorted to the summit by police. The event’s general session continued as scheduled.
