NORFOLK, Va. — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is sending 5,000 vegan cookies to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.

“It’s difficult to be away from home, especially around the holidays, and we wanted to let them know we were thinking of them,” said Vegan Campaign coordinator Kristie Phelps.

The shipment left the United States on Monday. PETA officials did not know when the cookies were expected to arrive on ship.

This isn’t the first time that PETA has done its part to support the troops by making sure that they get healthful vegetarian snacks. For Thanksgiving 2001, the group shipped 5,000 packages of vegetable jerky to sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

This “made such a big splash with the crew,” the PETA press release said, that the organization wanted to do it again.

“Eggs are laden with cholesterol,” said Phelps, “and we didn’t want to give our sailors anything that would weigh them down. And, of course, we worry about animal suffering.”

These vegan cookies contain no milk or eggs. PETA’s position is that dairy cows and laying hens are treated cruelly during production and slaughter.

Sailors can look forward to chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, trail mix, and peanut butter oatmeal raisin, according to Phelps.
