CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The servicemembers injured in an explosion on the Central Training Area in late March have been identified as Staff Sgt. Joseph M. Gallo III and Petty Officer 3rd Class Ackrianne McDaniel, according to a Marine Corps news release.

A third member of their explosive ordnance disposal team, Gunnery Sgt. John H. Roy III, 32, was killed when a World War II-era shell exploded while being prepared for disposal March 24 on Demolition Range 3.

Gallo, a Marine explosive ordnance disposal technician, was flown to Tripler Medical Center in Hawaii March 26 and is in stable condition.

McDaniel was treated at U.S. Naval hospital Okinawa on Camp Lester. She is a hospital corpsman assigned to the Camp Kinser Family Practice Clinic.

Roy, 32, of Muscogee, Ga., was posthumously promoted to gunnery sergeant and his remains have been returned to his family in the States.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the release.

UMUC schedules commencementsThe University of Maryland University College Asia will hold it’s 53rd annual Japan commencement at 4 p.m. April 18 at The New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo.

More than 70 graduates are to receive their associate and bachelor’s degrees.

The university’s commencements will be held April 25 for Okinawa-based students and May 2 for Korea students.

Guam base gym to get $33M face-liftA renovated gym is in store for U.S. Naval Base Guam.

Groundbreaking for the $33 million Charles King Gym project was to be held Thursday, Navy officials said in a news release Tuesday.

Guam-based contractor DCK Pacific will transform the current gymnasium and fitness center into a "state-of-the-art facility and incorporate energy efficient and environmentally-conscious concepts," the release said.

Work is scheduled for completion in January 2011.

Dallas cheerleaders host youth clinicThe Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading squad will conduct a youth clinic at Yokosuka Naval Base at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the gym at the James D. Kelly Fleet Recreation Center.

It will be followed by a performance and meet-and-greet at 6 p.m.
