CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Camp Foster Gate 5 was shut down for an hour Thursday after a suspicious package was found at a nearby building, Marine officials said.

The provost marshal’s office received a call about a package around 10:45 a.m. at the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1, Marine spokesman 1st Lt. Judd Wilson said.

The provost marshal’s office, base firefighters and an explosive ordnance disposal team responded to the scene within five minutes and closed Gate 5 as a precaution, Wilson said.

No other roads or gates were closed, Marine officials said.

Wilson said the package was found to be no threat and was removed. The contents of the package were not disclosed. The provost marshal’s office is investigating the incident, he said.

Sign-ups kick off for soccer campKADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Sign-ups are under way for a six-week soccer summer camp for children and teens to be held June 23 to July 26 at Kadena High School.

Roberto Iwashita, who played professionally for a team in Brazil and now coaches in Okinawa for Requios FC, will instruct, according to a news release.

Junior camp for 7- to 12-year-olds will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Camp for teenagers will run Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Association to host Flag Day ceremonyKADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — The Air Force Sergeants Association will hold a flag-burning ceremony at 3 p.m. June 13 at the flagpole at 18th Wing Headquarters.

Flags no longer fit for display will be burned and buried, according to a news release. The ceremony is to commemorate Flag Day.

Servicemembers are advised to wear their uniforms, and attire is business casual for civilians.
