Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, will hold a memorial ceremony Friday at 8 a.m. in front of CPO Club. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Terry Scott will speak.

Iwakuni Marine Corps Air Station will hold a memorial luncheon Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the Southside Chowhall. Col. Howard F. Barker, commanding officer of Marine Aircraft Group 12, will speak at the event.

Misawa fireworks rescheduled

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — The fireworks originally scheduled for Labor Day will be Friday from 7 to 7:45 p.m. — weather permitting — at the base beach. The event was postponed due to rain Monday.

Continuous shuttle service will be provided from Rocky Roost parking lot and the North Area Shoppette to the beach between 6 and 8:30 p.m.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Coolers are allowed, but glass items are not.

The beach will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for fireworks setup. Call DSN 226-9378 for more information.

Typhoon visits Misawa

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — The remnants of Typhoon Songda blew through Misawa Air Base on Wednesday with wind gusts reaching 76 mph, according to Senior Airman Douglas Jones, weather forecaster for 35th Operations Support Squadron weather flight. Sustained winds were 47 mph, with peak winds from about 5 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The wind knocked down branches and tree limbs on base and throughout Misawa city. Base spokesman Tech. Sgt. Mikal Canfield said Wednesday afternoon that base officials were “still assessing any possible structural damage.”
