CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Marine assigned to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing died Monday after sustaining head injuries in a fall down a flight of stairs April 16.

Pfc. Joseph C. Filip, 20, of Clinton, N.Y., an aviation supply specialist with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-36, died at 8:25 a.m. at Urasoe Sogo Hospital.

Filip fell down the stairs of a bar in the Makishi district of Naha around 3 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Okinawa prefectural police. The spokesman would not release further details, saying it was determined “that it was an accident and no foul play was suspected.”

The Marine Corps stated that the accident’s cause is under investigation.

A memorial service for Filip is scheduled for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Camp Foster theater.

Sprint relay, fun run

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society 5K Sprint Relay and Kids Fun Run is to be Saturday on Camp Lester.

The kids run, to begin at 7:30 a.m., will be followed by the three-person team relay, to be run over the Camp Lester 5K route. The Camp Lester Fitness Center will be the starting point.

Each participant will run approximately one mile. Cost is $5 per runner; all proceeds go to the N-MCRS.

Prizes will be given to the first place all-male and all-female teams.

Tuition aid deadline

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Spousal Tuition Aid Program registration deadline for term five is May 13.

The need-based tuition assistance program is open to all spouses of sailors and Marines living overseas with their sponsors. For qualifying applicants, STAP can provide a grant of up to 50 percent or $350 per undergraduate term, or up to 50 percent or $400 per graduate term.

Kinser barbecue cook-off

The Camp Kinser Commissary, with Washington Beef, Coca-Cola and Overseas Services, is hosting a barbecue competition Saturday at the store.

Entry is free and the meat to be used will be provided free. Each participant must prepare one rack of pork spareribs and one rack of beef back ribs. Contestants must leave their names and phone numbers with the dollar amount of the product provided for that entry; if a griller doesn’t show up, he or she will be charged for the meat.

Grills and charcoal will be provided, or contestants may bring their own. Gas grills will not be on hand; they must be brought by participants wishing to use them. Grill setup will begin at 8 a.m.; judging is to begin at 12:30 p.m.

The top three finishers will receive commissary shopping sprees of $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third places. Free hot dogs, hamburgers and Coke will be offered.

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — The Misawa Chief Petty Officers Association is accepting applications for the 2005 Alfred Leo Halpin IV Scholarship, open to all high school seniors. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Applications will be accepted through Friday at the Edgren High School counselor’s office. MSF training at Misawa

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — Misawa’s first class for Motorcycle Safety Foundation course instructors is May 2. The Rider Coach Prep Workshop teaches people how to conduct the Beginner’s Riders Course curriculum, manage the motorcycle range exercises and evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills. Sign up in person for the workshop from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in Bldg. 507, Room 121.

Fashion show coming

CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea — Camp Red Cloud’s Better Opportunities for Single and unaccompanied Soldiers (BOSS) program will host a fashion show at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Categories are to include casual/sportswear; business attire; and evening/formal wear.

Men and women may enter. Judges will rate stage presence, attire originality, accessory coordination and audience response. Prizes will be awarded.

The show will be held at Red Cloud’s Community Activity Center.

‘Spirit Warrior’ conference

YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — “Spirit Warrior,” a conference for Christian men in South Korea, will be held Friday and Saturday at the South Post Chapel.

The conference is an “awesome opportunity for men on the Korean peninsula to fellowship with one another, be encouraged in their Christian walk and be challenged to ‘fight the good fight of faith,’” according to a conference flier.
