Misawa Air Base, Japan, personnel should avoid unnecessary travel to Aomori City on Saturday due to a large demonstration planned there, officials said in a force-protection advisory.

More than 3,000 people are expected to protest meetings of energy ministers scheduled a day later. On Sunday, there will be separate gatherings by Group of Eight country officials and energy ministers from the United States, Japan, China, India and South Korea. Multiple streets will be blocked off and a large number of Japanese police will be assigned for control, according to the notice.

Atsugi base newspaper goes digital

Naval Air Facility Atsugi’s monthly newspaper went digital this week when an online edition replaced the 12-page printed edition of the Skywriter, the Navy announced.

The June 2 switch will save $25,000 a year in publishing costs, base spokesman Tim McGough said in a news release.

The paperless format also is more "environmentally friendly," he said.
