S. Korea set to change road-naming standardSEOUL — If you’re heading to the mall in Seoul this weekend, should you drive on Gangnamdaero, Gangnamdaelo or Gangnamdaeno?

Right now it doesn’t matter, as all three endings — “no,” “lo” and “ro” — are used interchangeably in South Korea.

But that’s coming to an end next year when the South Korea Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs implements a new standard for Romanizing the South Korean words for “boulevard,” “avenue” and “road.”

Under the new system, boulevard becomes “daero,” avenue becomes “ro” and road will use “gil,” Moon Jung-hee, a ministry spokesman, said Tuesday.

The spokesman said the current system can be confusing for foreigners.

He said the change will be gradual, with new signs being put up as old ones require replacement.

The new suffixes also will be hyphenated, making Gangnamdaero “Gangnam-daero.
