STUTTGART, Germany — One U.S. soldier was killed and four were injured in a one-car accident early Saturday morning on Autobahn A62 between Freisen and Birkenfeld, according to an Army press release.

Spc. Dustin Ray Simmons, 21, of Woodruff, S.C., a combat engineer, was pronounced dead at the scene by a German doctor, according to the release issued Tuesday.

The four injured soldiers were admitted for treatment to two separate German hospitals and all have been released, U.S. Army Europe spokesman Bruce Anderson said Tuesday.

All five were assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Baumholder.

A memorial ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Chapel One in Baumholder.

U.S. and German authorities are investigating the crash.

A German police spokesman said Tuesday that the results of a blood sample taken from the driver to check for the presence of alcohol or drugs has not been analyzed yet.
