Office workers and gardeners looking to spruce up their surroundings have a new option at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily.

The Navy Exchange Depot, which opened May 12 at the NASSIG II base, sells office, gardening, cleaning and computer supplies, including printing accessories and desk chairs. The warehouse-like depot also offers cookware and power tools.

The depot, open to all authorized NEX customers, replaces the Serve mart, which sold similar items but was open only to departments, said Lt. Steve Curry, base spokesman.

The 11,400-foot store will continue serving departments, and an additional 5,000 square feet is reserved to store supplies for ships in the Mediterranean Sea, said Patrick Knowles, NEX manager.

The depot idea started two years ago in Japan, where three depots are established. It expanded to Rota, Spain, last year. A third office depot will open in Naples, Italy, in mid-June.
