SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Residents of the base will have a chance Sunday to walk along a newly built Japanese highway.

An elevated section of the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway along the city waterfront is slated to open to traffic March 20, but the Japanese government will allow pedestrians from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday following an opening ceremony, according to Sasebo city officials.

Visitors will be able to walk from the new interchange outside the base’s front gate to either the Minato toll exit or through a mountain tunnel to Ainoura.

The event is free to the public. The opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will include dancing and taiko drumming.
