NAPLES, Italy — The Navy’s delay on some permanent-change -of-station moves means families now have to provide additional paperwork to register their children for the next school year at Defense Department schools.
Parents have to verify that their personnel rotation date has been changed in order for their children to remain eligible for enrollment with Department of Defense Dependent Schools.
"This verification can be a letter from the commander or a memorandum from their personnel office — but the school must be notified, because the existing rotation date on file will show that family as being ineligible to attend DODDS-E schools," said Maggie Menzies, a spokeswoman for DODDS-Europe.
While there is no deadline for school registration, Menzies said parents should provide the documentation as soon as possible.
"Obviously, for planning purposes, it helps to register your children early," Menzies said.
The Navy announced the freeze on PCS moves earlier this month, saying it would help the service remain within the fiscal 2009 budget. Moves made after September will be funded with money for fiscal 2010.
In all, the delay is expected to affect about 14,000 sailors worldwide, according to officials from the Navy Personnel Command.
