SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — The amphibious transport dock USS Denver was honored this month with the Chief of Naval Operations Ship-Helicopter Safety Award for the best safety record of 2009, the Navy said Thursday.

The Denver also picked up the award last year, according to the ship’s public affairs office.

In 2009, the Sasebo-based ship provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to Taiwan following Typhoon Morakot and to Indonesia following a series of devastating earthquakes.
