YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Naval Criminal Investigative Service and 7th Fleet staff officials on the USS Coronado are investigating who may have placed a wireless video camera found April 14 in one of the ship’s shower areas designated for women.
“The camera was found a couple of weeks ago in an enlisted female shower,” said Cmdr. Scott Gureck, a 7th Fleet spokesman.
“It was a generic model camera — its make and model are unknown. [The camera] was about 2 inches in diameter that ran off a nine-volt battery, and the battery was dead.”
The camera was found while the ship was in Yokosuka, he said.
The shower was in a female enlisted berthing area that wasn’t fully occupied at the time.
Gureck said no arrests have been made.
“A sweep was conducted of all adjacent areas that could have possibly been within range [of the camera], and no receiver was found,” he said.
The Coronado arrived in Yokosuka on March 24.
The ship is serving as the 7th Fleet flagship while the USS Blue Ridge undergoes an extensive dry-dock maintenance period, according to a Navy news release.
The Coronado is experimenting with a distinct manning concept. The crew is made up of Military Sealift Command civilian mariners and a small group of sailors who are temporary replacements for the 481 servicemembers normally assigned to the ship.
