YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — The Navy on Tuesday identified the sailor who died following an accident in Singapore on Friday.

Navy airman Gatlin Scott Green, 22, an aviation boatswain’s mate, died after being crushed between a small boat and the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis during a port visit to Singapore, according to Navy officials.

Green was securing the drains from the carrier’s catapult system as part of a routine procedure to prevent oily water from flowing into the harbor, Navy officials said.

Green had served aboard the Stennis since September 2006.

Green, of York, Pa., enlisted in May 2006 and reported to recruiting command at Great Lakes, Ill., before heading to Naval Aviation Technical Training Command in Pensacola, Fla.

A memorial service was planned aboard the ship, Navy spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis said Tuesday.
