KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S.-led NATO mission in Afghanistan has teamed up with local forces to provide supplies to victims of recent flooding in the country.

Over 150 people were killed and hundreds of homes were destroyed as of Friday after heavy rains earlier in the week caused flash floods in several central and eastern provinces, the government said.

NATO’s Resolute Support mission helped deliver food, water and hygiene supplies to those impacted by the flooding in Charikar, the capital of Parwan province.

“Together we are here to help,” Resolute Support said in a tweet Thursday that included photos of Afghan and coalition forces loading and unloading supplies from helicopters and vehicles.

Also on Thursday, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Scott Miller, visited the province — roughly 40 miles from the capital Kabul and home to Bagram Airfield — where he pledged support on behalf of the coalition, an Afghan Defense Ministry statement said.

Meanwhile, the search for bodies in Charikar continued for a third-straight day Friday.

“There are still people missing, they might be stuck under the ruins of their homes,” said Wahida Shahkar, a spokeswoman for Parwan’s governor.

Local resident Jalil Charikari managed to flee his house with his wife and only son earlier in the week, but he said many neighbors and relatives were unable to outrun the sudden rush of water.

“I woke up to the sound of the walls falling down and screaming people,” Charikari told Stars and Stripes by phone. “We’ve been searching for bodies for days and have found so many.”
