NAPLES, Italy — A sailor assigned to Capodichino was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital after his vehicle was found in a ditch early Wednesday.
Italian Carabinieri notified Naples base security at 4 a.m. that a vehicle was found off the SS-7 motor way near Pinetamare, northwest of Naples. The vehicle was traced to the sailor, who worked for Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station, Europe Central, said Lt. Susan Henson, base spokeswoman. An Italian ambulance took the sailor to a civilian hospital in Caserta.
His name and other identifying information are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Carabinieri and Navy authorities are investigating the incident.
The station provides communications, computers and phone service to numerous European and central commands.
