-NAPLES, Italy — A Naples Navy officer will be tried on sexual-assault charges in a general court-martial next month.
Cmdr. Douglas L. Maddox was arraigned Tuesday at Capodichino on charges of rape, forcible sodomy, assault consummated by a battery, adultery, indecent acts, indecent liberties, use and possession of a controlled substance and impeding an investigation.
All of the allegations involve an 18-year-old woman who was a minor when the events allegedly took place, between August 1999 and October 2002. One of the charges, indecent liberties, also involves a 15-year-old girl.
The convening authority, Rear Adm. Michael Holmes, commander of Fleet Air Mediterranean, dismissed previous charges of indecent assault and attempting to impede an investigation based upon information derived from the Article 32 investigation in July, said Lt. Cmdr. Carla McCarthy, fleet spokeswoman.
If found guilty, Maddox, 43, faces confinement for life, total forfeitures of pay and dismissal from military service. The assistant maintenance officer is attached to Commander, Naval Surface Group Mediterranean.
The court-martial proceedings are scheduled to begin Oct. 27, with a motions hearing Oct. 6.
