ARLINGTON, Va. — A Marine Corps base and a Navy base in Japan are among a number of installations garnering the Navy’s top environmental stewardship awards this year.

Selected under 2004 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Awards competition, Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Japan and Marine Corps Base Camp Butler on Okinawa took top honors for overseas installations.

Atsugi is the home of Carrier Air Wing 5, the airborne teeth of the Kitty Hawk battle group.

Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler includes eight main camps on Okinawa — Foster, Courtney, Kinser, Lester, Hansen, Schwab, MCAS Futenma and Camp Gonsalves, which is the home of the Jungle Warfare Training Center — as well as Fuji on mailand Japan.

According to a Navy announcement, the awards program recognizes Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships and installations for exceptional care of the environment.
