OKINAWA CITY — An American civilian was in Okinawa police custody Tuesday, accused of attacking his estranged wife.

An Okinawa police spokesman said Dwayne A. Jones, 32, was arrested Sunday at his home in Okinawa City’s Ikehara district following a 4:40 a.m. incident in the parking lot of a Chatan bar.

A charge of felony assault was referred to the Naha District Public Prosecutor’s office Tuesday afternoon.

According to a police report, Jones, a Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation employee, ran into his 32-year-old Okinawan wife in Chatan early Sunday. An argument ensued in the parking lot; Jones is accused of pushing her against a car trunk and starting to strangle her, the police report stated.

A passerby called police, who arrived after Jones had fled, according to the report. He was arrested Sunday evening at his home, a police spokesman said.

The estranged wife sustained neck and back injuries and was treated at a local hospital, where she was told recovery could take more than a month, the police spokesman said.
