A prisoner in the U.S. military detention facility at Camp Bucca, Iraq, has died of “apparent natural causes,” the military said in a statement released Tuesday.

The prisoner, whose name, nationality and age were not given, “died July 1 of apparent natural causes while in the intensive care unit at the Theater Internment Facility hospital at Camp Bucca,” the statement read. Camp Bucca is south of Basra.

“The detainee was pronounced dead at 10:14 a.m. by an attending physician at Camp Bucca’s medical facility. An investigation is pending to determine cause of death, a standard procedure for detainees who die while in custody.”

An autopsy will be completed, then the remains will be returned to the prisoner’s family, officials said.

There are some 17,000 prisoners in U.S. military detention throughout Iraq.
