The Pentagon announced a pair of general officer assignments for commands in Middle East late Thursday.

Maj. Gen. Jay W. Hood will become the chief of staff for the U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. He most recently served as commanding general, First Army Division East, Fort Meade, Md.

National Guard Brig. Gen. Joseph B. DiBartolomeo will become deputy chief of the Office of Defense Representative-Pakistan, under Central Command. He is currently the deputy commander of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.

U.S. transfers 1,000th Humvee to Iraqi forcesAmerican troops have transferred the 1,000th up-armored Humvee to Iraqi security forces through the Foreign Military Sales Program.

All of the Humvees have been used by U.S. units in Iraq. Then, they are purchased and refurbished, painted in the color schemes of the Iraqi army or police.

Iraqis are then given three-day courses on driving and maintaining the vehicles.

U.S. officials did not immediately have a cost estimate for the Humvees.
