HANAU, Germany — A memorial service will be held Thursday for a pair of former teachers who died in an automobile accident in late July.

Beverly Elaine Whitaker, 60, and William James Whitaker, 61, taught at Frankfurt High School, Hanau High School and Hanau Elementary School, where they retired from the Department of Defense Dependent Schools system in June 2003.

The couple was driving from their home in Florida to a son’s wedding in Virginia on July 29 when they were involved in a multiple-car accident.

According to newspaper reports, a car in one of the southbound lanes on Interstate 85 was struck from behind, causing it to veer into the northbound traffic. It collided with the Chevrolet Blazer the Whitakers were driving, and all three people were killed.

The Whitakers taught at DODDS schools for 31 years. They are survived by their sons, Cory and Kyle, who both graudated from Hanau High School.

The service will be held at 4 p.m. at the chapel on Pioneer Kaserne. Condolences may be sent to Hanau Middle School, Unit 20193, Box 16, APO AE 09165-0016, Attn: Whitaker Family, or can be posted on a Web site: 4allfree.com/cgi/gb.id?Whitaker
