Hundreds of tons of sausage, ham and other meat products have been recalled across Germany because of possible contamination with the bacteria listeria.

The Bavaria-based company Sieber has recalled more than 200 products, including vegetarian meat substitutes, German media reported.

The company posted a notice on its website asking consumers to destroy any of its products. “In a few individual cases, listeria was found in our company’s ham and sausage products,” it said.

Sieber supplies several major grocery store chains, including Rewe, Edeka, Lidl, Penny and Tengelmann. German media reported that Sieber also delivered products to airports in Munich and Frankfurt. The company has been ordered to cease production.

The recalled products have the following code: BY 10751.

Authorities suspect listeria infection in the deaths of four people since 2012, when a strain of the bacteria was observed in Germany, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported.

Symptoms may include fever and muscle aches.

The company has a list of all its products on its website: tinyurl.com/sieber-recall. Sieber said consumers can call (+49) 08171-98210 if they have questions. A spokesman for the company said a representative who speaks English is available.

Infection with the listeria bacteria primarily affects those with weakened immune systems, newborns and pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
