KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Troops who love beer, sports and sexy centerfolds are going to love the freebie coming their way.

Maxim magazine is sending 20,000 copies of the popular men’s magazine to servicemembers in Iraq. The magazine is also encouraging readers to donate their old Maxim magazines to the men and women in uniform — well, probably mostly the men — deployed to Kuwait.

Actress Brittany Murphy strips down for a sultry cover shoot that she reportedly would do only if the publisher sent copies to the troops. The May edition includes a poster of the “Sin City” star.

“Troops can pull out the poster and pin it up,” magazine spokeswoman Jessica Baltera said.

This month’s magazine is dubbed a “collector’s edition.”

Murphy appears in a skimpy two-piece on the inside in a pictorial headlined “Operation High Drop.” The actress has appeared in “Riding in Cars with Boys,” “Just Married” and in “8 Mile,” with rapper Eminem. The Atlanta native stars in this year’s blockbuster “Sin City,” which is based on Frank Miller’s comic books.

She told Jay Leno on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” earlier this month that one of the reasons she posed for the magazine is because her cousin is a Marine serving in Iraq.

The magazine will send copies to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment in Tikrit, Iraq, and to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Camp Victory. Soldiers there can distribute the magazine as they see fit, Baltera said.

The magazine will be airlifted to troops in Iraq, Baltera said. Maxim might send more free copies to troops in the future, she added.

Maxim unabashedly covers such topics as sex, sports and beer with its male readers in mind. It is the best selling men’s magazine in the United States and worldwide with more than 17 million international readers and nearly 4 million monthly copies sold, according to Dennis Publishing, Inc.
