GINOWAN, Okinawa — A Marine was stabbed Saturday in Oyama district of Ginowan, near Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, according to an Okinawa police spokesman.

The 22-year-old Marine, assigned to MCAS Futenma, stumbled into a bar near the base’s main gate at 11:15 p.m., calling for help. She told police she was walking alone toward the gate when she was stabbed by an unknown assailant, according to police.

Okinawa police routinely do not release the names of victims of crimes.

The woman said she left the bar about five minutes before she was attacked by a tall black man wearing a yellow shirt, according to the police spokesman. She was stabbed in the side and was taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital on Camp Lester, where she was recovering Monday.

The woman, who stands about 5-feet-5, told police her attacker was taller than she was and also might have been injured seriously in the struggle.

“She said she fiercely resisted the attacker,” the police spokesman said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is cooperating with local police in the investigation.
