CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A 20-year-old Marine was sentenced to 18 years in prison and given a dishonorable discharge for attempting to kill his girlfriend during a December fight on Camp Foster.
According to Marine Consolidated Public Affairs on Okinawa, Lance Cpl. Matthew P. Toups, assigned to the 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, was found guilty Sept. 16 of attacking his girlfriend with a knife on Dec. 17.
His defense was that the woman received a knife wound to her neck as the result of a struggle, during which he crashed through a window and fell several stories, breaking both of his ankles, according to Marine public affairs.
The name of the victim was withheld.
2nd Lt. Antony Andrious said Toups, of Metairie, La., initially was held at the U.S. Naval Hospital on Camp Lester until he was mobile and could be placed in pretrial confinement.
Besides attempted murder, Toups also was charged with assault, failure to register a knife longer than 2 3/8 inches long, impersonating a commissioned officer, wrongful use of a government computer, carrying a concealed weapon and wrongful possession of child pornography, Andrious said.
