NAHA, Okinawa — A Camp Schwab Marine corporal received a suspended prison sentence Friday for indecent public exposure.
Cpl. James J. DeAngelis, 36, assigned to 3rd Marine Division’s Combat Assault Battalion, Headquarters and Service Company, was sentenced to five months in prison, suspended for three years, for exposing himself to Japanese teenage girls twice in the village of Ginoza last December and once Jan. 31 during the Nago Cherry Blossom festival.
DeAngelis, held in custody at the Naha Detention Center since his Jan. 31 arrest, pleaded guilty in April in Naha District Court to one charge of indecent exposure that included the three incidents.
According to evidence produced at his trial, he was arrested after he exposed himself to passing high school girls at 9:45 a.m. on a street in Nago, near where the city’s annual cherry blossom festival was taking place. When arrested, he was under the influence of alcohol, according to a police report.
During Friday’s sentencing , Judge Masashi Kurihara said DeAngelis’ misconduct was compounded because it was the third time he acted obscenely with teenagers.
On Dec. 6, he exposed himself to a group of junior high school girls in Ginoza at 11:30 a.m., Kurihara said. Five days later, at about 8:40 a.m., DeAngelis flashed a high school girl.
“The defendant committed the crimes only to satisfy his base sexual desire,” Kurihara said.
The judge said he had no sympathy for the defendant.
However, the defendant is deeply remorseful and he promised in this court that he would never drink alcohol,” Kurihara said, explaining why he suspended the sentence.
