KITZINGEN, Germany — Kitzingen American Elementary School, currently operating in two separate buildings, will divide into two schools for the next school year, a Department of Defense Dependents’ Schools spokesman said Monday.
Both buildings are in the Marshall Heights housing area on the west edge of Kitzingen, home to the families of 1st Infantry Division and V Corps soldiers stationed at nearby Larson Barracks and Harvey Barracks. The buildings are separated by about one-half mile, which has made them complicated to administer, said Ed Atterberry, a spokesman for DODDS Bavaria District.
He said pupils in kindergarten through grade two will attend Building 350 (near the B8 highway), which will continue to be known as Kitzingen American Elementary School. Its principal will be David Markowitz, who will be transferring from Kaiserslautern.
Pupils in grades 3 through 5 will attend classes in Building 319, near the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Shoppette. It will be called Kitzingen American Intermediate School and will be headed by principal Shirley Sheck, who will transfer from Gelnhausen, near Hanau.
Under the new arrangement, two buildings no longer will need to share a single nurse or librarian, Atterberry said. He said Joseph Tafoya, the Department of Defense Education Activity director, approved the change last summer, but there wasn’t time to put the changes in place until this year.
