KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — A residential section of Kaiserslautern near the university will be evacuated for about six hours on Friday so experts can defuse two World War II-era bombs.
The bombs were discovered in a forested area at the edge of the university quarter, the city said in a news release. All residents within the evacuation area, which includes parts of Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse and Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse, must leave their homes no later than 9 a.m. Friday. The city will make arrangements to transport those in need of assistance. Those who fail to leave by 9 a.m. will be ordered out of the area by police.
The city urged residents to close windows and blinds and to turn off electrical and gas appliances.
Those who are evacuated can go to the St. Theresia community center at Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 31.
The evacuation is expected to last until about 3 p.m. but could go longer, the city said.
Those living in the communities of Dansenberg, Breitenau and Espensteig will also be affected because the L502 from Dansenberg will be closed starting at 10:30 a.m. There also will be no bus service during the evacuation period.
