KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Teens and spouses have until April 13 to submit applications for Kadena’s Summer Hire program.

The eight-week employment program will place roughly 150 workers in clerical and labor positions in units and offices throughout the base, including 18th Medical Group, 18th Maintenance Group, Karing Kennels, lodging and food service, said Sonia Ordorica, a human resource specialist with the base’s Civilian Personnel Office.

New hires will work 20 hours a week, earning $5.20 an hour, according to the personnel office.

The June 22-to-Aug. 14 program can "provide real-world work experience in a positive work environment," Ordorica said.

Military dependents and spouses, and dependents of appropriated fund, nonappropriated fund and Army and Air Force Exchange Service civilians, ages 14 through 22, are eligible to apply.

Dependents of sponsors employed with the Red Cross, USO, DOD contractors, exchange concessionaires, military banking facilities and universities are not eligible.

If the number of applications exceeds the available 150 positions, then applicants will be selected based on a lottery system, Ordorica said.

How to applyApplications can be picked up at the Civilian Personnel Office at Building 721-A, the youth center, Kadena and Ryukyu middle schools, and Kadena High School.

On June 22, new hires will participate in a briefing to review responsibilities before heading off to work, Ordorica said.
