The Allied Command Europe has broadened its area of responsibility and received a name change Monday.
ACE and the Allied Command Transformation headquarters have merged into one headquarters and is now known as Allied Command Operations.
The new ACO will now be in charge of all NATO commands in Europe, as well as those operational elements that formerly came under the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic.
General James L. Jones, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, will retain his title and assume strategic command for the preparation and conduct of all NATO operations.
The change is the result of the 2002 Prague Summit, where NATO leaders announced plans to revitalize the alliance and its military command structure.
The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe retains its name.
